The LumaCool™ teeth whitening system.

LumaCool™ / LumaArch™ / LumaWhite™

The LumaCool™ system is LumaLite, Inc.'s professional teeth whitening product.

Previously this system went by the name LumaArch™. Now it's called the LumaCool™ system and it includes both in-office and at-home products (LumaWhite Plus™).

As compared with many other professional teeth whitening systems, one advantage of the LumaCool™ product is that the amount of treatment time needed can be as much as two-thirds less.

What type of whitener is used?

The LumaCool™ system uses a proprietary hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching compound. They have named it LumaWhite™.

This whitener comes prepackaged as two individual components (a powder and a liquid) that are mixed together at the time of application.

The resulting paste has a 35% hydrogen peroxide concentration. And it has a pH of about 6, which is a little more acidic than some competing products. (More about professional whiteners...)

Is a bleaching light used?

The LumaCool™ teeth whitening bleaching light.

Treatment with the LumaCool™ system includes the use of a xenon-halogen bleaching light. These lights are manufactured by LumaLite, Inc. specifically for use with their whitening system.

LumaLite, Inc. also manufactures a LED (light-emitting diode) bleaching light. They have given this light unit the name LumaCool™.

The wavelength of the light emitted from these units lies in the range of 405 to 580nm (meaning that the light has a blue-green coloration).

The theory associated with the use of a bleaching lights is one where the manufacturer believes that light of a specific wavelength produces an activation of their whitener. And as a result, enhances its whitening effect. (Not all dentists consider this theory valid.)

When one of these lights is placed into position, it simultaneously illuminates all of the patient's upper and lower teeth. This serves as a time and effort-saving feature for the dentist.

Tests evaluating the LumaCool™ xenon-halogen and LumaCool™ LED bleaching lights have confirmed that they do not create a harmful tooth-heating affect when they are used. This is an important feature.

FYI: Your dentist probably paid in excess of $4,500 for their LumaCool™ bleaching light. The LumaCool™ LED bleaching unit costs in excess of $2,500.

How long do treatments take?

LumaCool™ whitening treatments usually take less than an hour. Competing products typically take one hour or more.

Each treatment session involves three individual applications of the whitener. Each application is left in place for 8 minutes. This means that the total exposure of the patient's teeth to the bleaching agent is around 24 minutes. This is a shorter duration than with many other systems.

Are at-home follow-up treatments recommended?

LumaLite makes the recommendation that whitening sessions should be followed up with at-home (tray based) whitening treatments. They recommend the use of their LumaWhite Plus™ product. (More about the purpose of at-home treatments...)

The whitening procedure.

The individual steps involved with the LumaCool™ whitening process are essentially the same as those involved with any other professional system. In particular however, as you read through our description of the process, note that the LumaCool™ whitening system does include the use of a paint-on dental dam and the "activation" of the whitening gel with a bleaching light.
