Electric Toothbrush Reviews :
The Philips Sonicare FlexCare RS930 sonic toothbrush with UV brush head sanitizer.
|
The Sonicare FlexCare RS930 rechargeable electric toothbrush with integrated UV (ultra violet light) brush head sanitizer.
The FlexCare RS930 represents the top tier of the Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush product line, a position it holds along with the FlexCare model R910 sonic toothbrush. While both of these 900 series models feature the exact same Sonicare brush, the FlexCare RS930's base has been designed with an integrated UV (ultra-violet light) toothbrush head sanitizer. It also comes with a second, compact-sized, brush head. In comparison to some other less fully-featured Sonicare products, the FlexCare 900 series brushes (including the FlexCare RS930) utilize Sonicare's ProResults-style brush heads, have a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, a multi-voltage charger that can be used as a compact travel charger, have the greatest range of cleaning "modes" and preconfigured cleaning "routines" of any of the Sonicare toothbrushes, and have a design that offers a reduced level of operational noise and vibration (as compared to other Sonicare models). We describe all of these features, as well as others, in our review below. Philips and Sonicare are registered trademarks of Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. We see this toothbrush referenced as the Sonicare FlexCare RS930 with UV Sanitizer HX6932/10. Please realize that model features of a toothbrush can change. Before ordering you should always evaluate the specific product you plan to purchase so to insure that you know precisely what features and accessories you will receive. |
Model-specific features of the Sonicare FlexCare RS930 electric toothbrush with ultra-violet light brush head sanitizer.
» Sonicare's UV brush head sanitizer.
A big difference between the FlexCare RS930 and all other Sonicare electric toothbrush models is that it has an UV sanitizer (ultra violet light toothbrush sanitizer) integrated into the design of its charger base. The stated purpose of the sanitizing unit is to help to eliminate harmful bacteria that can accumulate on a user's brush head. Philips Sonicare advertising materials report that their UV toothbrush sanitizer is effective in killing 99% (hence the term sanitizer as opposed to sterilizer) of the bacteria E. coli and S. mutans (a bacterium that causes tooth decay) as well as the virus H. simplex (one of the herpes viruses) harbored on a user's electric toothbrush brush head.
Use of the UV sanitizer simply involves opening its door and placing one or two brush heads into it. The user then closes the door and presses the unit's start button that initiates a ten-minute sanitizing cycle. At the end of this cycle, the sanitizer automatically turns off and an indicator light signals that the sanitizing process has been completed.
» Flex Care RS930 - Operating speeds, modes, and brushing routines.
As a Sonicare FlexCare series 900 toothbrush, the FlexCare RS930 offers a variety of different operating speeds, modes, and routines from which its owner can choose. The Sonicare FlexCare brushes (including the RS930) offer more operational variation than any other Sonicare line.
The RS930 can be set to run in any one of three different operating "modes" (modes are essentially equivalent to "speed" or "power" settings found on other electric toothbrushes). They are, in descending order of brush agitation, the Clean, Sensitive, and Massage modes. Most users will probably utilize their toothbrush when it is set to Clean mode. This is the setting where the brush creates Sonicare's hallmark, patented 31,000-brush-strokes-per-minute cleaning action. Those people who find it difficult to tolerate the vigorous action of the Clean setting have the option of choosing the gentler (but less efficient) Sensitive mode. The Massage mode is not a brushing setting but instead operates the brush head in a fashion that Sonicare feels is appropriate for massaging and stimulating a person's gum tissue.
The FlexCare model RS930 has Sonicare's Smartimer and Programmable Quadpacer features. The Smartimer feature automatically turns off the brush after it has run for two minutes (the amount of brushing time that Sonicare feels most dentists recommend). The Quadpacer feature creates a beep-and-pause action intended to act as an indication to the user that one fourth of the Smartimer's brushing cycle has elapsed. (Sonicare recommends that a user should use a brushing approach where the user mentally divides their teeth into four separate groupings or quadrants.) The RS930's Programmable Quadpacer feature allows you to tack on an extra 30-second brushing interval to the Smartimer's brushing cycle (for a total of two-and-a-half minutes of brushing) so you can dedicate extra cleaning time to difficult areas.
Instead of selecting a "mode" the user can instead choose one of two "routines." The Go Care routine runs the brush at the above-mentioned Clean speed for one minute (the Quadpacer will signal at 15-second intervals). The Max Care routine operates the brush at Clean speed for 30 seconds followed by 15 seconds at the brush's Massage setting (the Quadpacer will signal at 45 second intervals) for a total running time of three minutes.
The FlexCare RS930 also has Sonicare's Easy-start feature. When this option is chosen the power (speed) at which the brush operates is incrementally increased over the user's next fourteen brushings. This is intended to provide an introductory time period during which the user's mouth can ease into and become accustom to the vigorous brushing action created by their Sonicare unit.
» ProResults brush heads.
ProResults brush heads have a design that is a little bit wider, with slightly more flared bristles, than previous generations of Sonicare brush heads. This allows for a slightly larger cleaning sweep during each brush stroke. Possibly more important to the user, ProResults brush heads have a quick and easy snap-on mount and their design tends to trap less debris. For identification, the user can install one of three interchangeable color-coded rings on their ProResults brush head. Philips Sonicare recommends that to maintain optimal brushing effectiveness, ProResults brush heads should be replaced every three months.
» Sonicare FlexCare batteries / recharging.
The FlexCare 900 series brushes, including the model RS930, have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that Philips Sonicare states can, when fully charged, deliver twenty 2-minute brushings. Recharging takes place as the toothbrush sits in its stand. Depending upon its initial status, it can take as long as 24 hours to fully recharge the battery. Because of this Sonicare recommends that the toothbrush should be left in its charging stand when not in use.
The FlexCare model RS930 features Sonicare's "deluxe" recharge gauge. This four-indicator gauge displays the approximate percentage battery of charge that remains (>75%, >50%, >25%, <25%). The FlexCare RS930's multi-voltage charger can be separated and used as a compact travel charger. As matter of convenience, any of the model RS930's electrical cord that is not needed may be wrapped out of the way inside its base.
» Other FlexCare RS930 design features.
As a member of the Sonicare FlexCare 900 series, the FlexCare RS930 has a vibration canceling design that reduces the vibrations you feel as you use the brush (about 80% over the Sonicare Elite model). This feature also makes the FlexCare 900 Series brushes quieter than other Sonicare models. The model RS930 brush is also 30% smaller and 16% lighter than the Sonicare Elite.
» Traveling with the Sonicare Flex Care RS930 sonic toothbrush.
The FlexCare RS930 comes with a travel case and two protective brush head caps. As mentioned previously, the RS930 comes with a compact multi-voltage travel charger.
» Sonicare warranties and guarantees.
The FlexCare RS930, like all other Sonicare models, comes with a two-year limited warranty. It also comes with Sonicare's 90-day money-back satisfaction guarantee. The satisfaction guarantee states that if you are not satisfied with your Sonicare electric toothbrush, for any reason, it may be returned for a refund. Since the precise terms and conditions of this offer are dictated by Philips Sonicare, if the availability of this guarantee is important to you should contact Philips Sonicare and/or evaluate the packing of the product you plan to purchase for current program details.
