The Philips Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 rechargeable sonic toothbrush.

The Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 rechargeable powered toothbrush.

The HealthyWhite R710 sonic toothbrush is a member of the Philips Sonicare's HealthyWhite 700 series line of electric toothbrushes (the other member of this series is the HealthyWhite R732). The salient distinguishing feature of the HealthyWhite 700 line is that they offer an unique brushing setting that Sonicare feels creates a brushing routine by which the user can accomplish superior surface stain removal (and thus create a whitening effect for their teeth).

The HealthyWhite R710 is less fully featured than the model R732. One significant difference is that the model R710 does not possess Sonicare's Sensitive operating mode. Additionally, the R710 only comes packaged with a single brush head (ProResults, Standard size) and does not come with a travel case.

In comparison to some of the other Sonicare electric toothbrushes, the HealthyWhite 700 series (including the HealthyWhite R710) offers a lithium ion rechargeable battery and a compact multi-voltage travel charger, utilizes ProResults brush heads, and are the only Sonicare models to offer the Clean and White mode. All of these product features are discussed in greater detail in our review below.

Philips and Sonicare are registered trademarks of Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.
Easy-start and QuadPacer are registered trademarks of Philips Oral HealthCare, Inc.

We see this toothbrush referenced as the Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 HX6711/02. Please realize that model features can change. Because of this you should always evaluate the specific product you plan to purchase so to insure that it has all of the accessories and features that you anticipate.

Model-specific features of the Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 electric toothbrush.

» HealthyWhite R710 - Operating modes, speeds, and brushing routines.

The HealthyWhite R710 powered toothbrush offers two operational modes. One of these is Sonicare's multi-speed Clean and White mode (the hallmark characteristic of the Sonicare HealthyWhite 700 series of electric brushes). The other is Clean mode (the mode in which the brush creates Sonicare's characteristic 31,000-brush-strokes-per-minute brushing action). Sonicare's Sensitive mode is not available on the R710.

In Clean and White mode the HealthyWhite R710 runs the brush in Clean mode followed by White mode (White mode is otherwise non-selectable as a brushing mode). The enhanced whitening capabilities that Sonicare suggests that the HealthyWhite 700 series of brushes possess is based on the use of this Clean and White mode. Sonicare claims that this brushing mode produces superior tooth surface stain removal (therefore creating a whitening effect for the user's teeth). The Clean and White routine is described more fully below.

The HealthyWhite R710 has Sonicare's Quadpacer and Smartimer features. In Clean mode the Smartimer feature automatically shuts the R710 off after it has run for two minutes. (Two minutes is the amount of brushing time that Sonicare feels most dentists recommend). The Quadpacer feature produces a pause-and-beep signal that indicates to the user that one fourth of their brushing cycle has elapsed. (Sonicare recommends using a brushing approach by which the user mentally segregates their teeth in four separate groupings or "quadrants.")

When the R710's Clean and White mode is selected, the toothbrush will run for two minutes in Clean mode. At the end of these two minutes the brush will then automatically switch to White mode (a noticeable change in the brush's sound will occur as it switches to a different brushing action). The brush will run in White mode for 30 seconds (with a beep at the 15-second mark) before shutting off. Sonicare's intentions with the Clean and White mode are that the user should focus on cleaning their mouth as a whole while the brush is operating in Clean portion of the Clean and White mode. Then, when the brush switches to White mode, the user should brush their upper and lower front teeth for fifteen seconds each. This allows the user's front teeth to receiving extra stain-removing, tooth-whitening brushing effect.

The HealthyWhite model R710 also sports Sonicare's Easy-start feature. When selected, this option incrementally increases the power (speed) at which the R710 operates over the user's next fourteen brushings. For those unfamiliar to the Sonicare brushing experience, utilization of this feature can provide an introductory period during which they can become accustom to the use of their new brush.

» ProResults brush heads.

The HealthyWhite model R710 uses Sonicare's ProResults-style brush heads. These brush heads come in two formats, the Mini (compact) and the Standard. The HealthyWhite R710 comes packaged with one Standard brush head. Adults will typically find the Standard brush head most suitable for their use. The Mini may be preferred by adolescents, people with comparatively small mouths or limited oral access, and people who have special brushing needs (braces, hard-to-reach places). Two extra ProResults brush heads can be stored on the R710's charging stand.

ProResults brushes have Sonicare's most recent brush head design. They are slightly wider and more flared than those brushes used with previous generations of Sonicare products and create a slightly larger cleaning sweep with each brush stroke. Possibly more important to the user, ProResults brush head units snap easily into place on the toothbrush handle and their design tends to trap less debris. The user can place one of three interchangeable color-coded rings on their brush head as a means of identification. Each brush head comes with a protective travel cap. As a means of maintaining optimal brushing efficiency, Philips Sonicare recommends that ProResults brush heads should be replaced every three months.

» Sonicare HealthyWhite batteries / recharging.

The HealthyWhite R710, just like the R732, has been designed with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The recharge gauge found on the R710 indicates the percentage of battery charge that remains (more or less than 50%). The toothbrush's recharging process takes place when it is seated in its stand. It can take as long as 24 hours to fully recharge the battery depending upon its initial status. Sonicare recommends that the toothbrush is left in its charging stand when not in use. Any portion of the HealthyWhite R732's electrical cord that is not needed can be wrapped out of the way inside its base. The R710's multi-voltage charger can also be used as a compact travel charger.

» Traveling with the Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 sonic toothbrush.

The HealthyWhite comes with a protective brush head cap and compact multi-voltage travel charger but does not come with a travel case.

» Sonicare warranties and guarantees.

The Sonicare HealthyWhite R710 comes with a two-year limited warranty. Sonicare also offers it standard 90-day money-back satisfaction guarantee with this product that states that if you are not satisfied with your Sonicare electric toothbrush for any reason it may be returned for a refund. Since we don't speak for Philips Sonicare and since terms and conditions can change, before you buy you should contact Philips Sonicare and/or evaluate the packing of the product you plan to purchase for current program details.

» HealthyWhite R710 sonic toothbrush evaluation recap:

The HealthyWhite R710 offers two brushing settings, the Clean and the Clean and White modes. The HealthyWhite electrics are the only Sonicare line that features the Clean and White mode. The R710 also features Sonicare's Smartimer, QuadPacer and Easy-start functions. It does not have Sonicare's Sensitive brushing mode.

The HealthyWhite R710's design includes a lithium-ion battery and the use of the newer style ProResults brush heads. This brush's multi-voltage charger can be used as a compact travel charger. While the R710 does not come with a travel case it's brush heads do come with a protective plastic cap.
