The Beyond™ Power Whitening system.
The Beyond™ Power Whitening system is Beyond Dental and Health's professional-strength teeth whitening product.
This product should not to be confused with the seemingly similar Beyond™ whitening system that can be found in non-dental venues, such as beauty shops and day spas.
What type of whitener is used?
The professional Beyond™ whitening system utilizes a proprietary 35% hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel that has a pH of about 5.5 (which is a little more acidic than most of the products we review). (More about professional whiteners.)
Is a bleaching light used?
The protocol for the Beyond™ system includes the use of a halogen bleaching light (named the "Power Whitening Accelerator").
The wavelength of the light emitted from this unit is in the range of 480 to 520nm (meaning it is a blue-green light).
The company suggests that the bleaching light enhances the effectiveness of their bleaching gel, and therefore the tooth whitening process as a whole. (These types of claims are considered to be controversial by some, including us.)
This light has been designed so it filters out both ultra-violet and infrared wave lengths. The result of this filtering is a "cool" blue-green light that does not produce a heating effect on the teeth being treated, which is important.
When the light is placed into position, it is capable of simultaneously illuminating all of the patient's teeth being treated (both upper and lower), which makes providing treatments easier and more efficient for the dentist.
We don't have an exact number to share with you about the cost of Beyond's™ Whitening Accelerator bleaching light, although we have seen price listings that run on the order of a few thousands. This light has a single dedicated purpose, whitening teeth, and is not really applicable for use with other dental procedures.
How long do treatments take?
Professional Beyond™ whitening treatments usually take less than an hour to complete.
Each treatment session is subdivided into three individual applications of the tooth whitener, with each application left in place for 10 minutes. That means the patient's teeth have a total whitener exposure time of 30 minutes.
Are at-home follow-up treatments recommended?
Continued bleaching with an at-home teeth whitening product, after the completion of an in-office session, is a decision that's left up to the treating dentist (and patient). It's not a formal part of the Beyond™ whitening protocol. (Why at-home products are sometimes used.)
The whitening procedure.
The procedure that a dentist follows when they perform professional-level Beyond™ treatments is essentially the same as for any other professional teeth whitening process.
When reading through the information accessed using the link above, note that the Beyond™ whitening system does include gum tissue isolation (either a rubber or paint-on dental dam) and the "activation" of the whitening gel via the use of a bleaching light. The need for continued whitening treatments after a professional session with an at-home bleaching system is left up to the discretion of the patient and the dentist.
