Alternatives to porcelain veneers: Tooth reshaping / Placing dental bonding.

If you are searching for an alternative to porcelain veneers, consider the following...

Rather than place a set of porcelain veneers, a dentist may be able to treat isolated cosmetic issues using any one a number of different types of comparative minor dental procedures. The end result that is achieved may not be as "cookie cutter" perfect as that that could be achieved with a set of porcelain veneers. But it very well may be one that looks more natural, is less structurally invasive, and has a lower cost and less need for maintenance associated with it.

A) Tooth reshaping.

There can be times when the cosmetic dilemma associated with a person's smile is created by minor irregularities in the shape of the individual teeth. This includes tooth length discrepancies, non-bilaterally matched corners and contours, and minor tooth rotations. If this is the case, in many instances it is a simple matter for a dentist to resolve these issues with the brief use of their dental drill.

Reshaping, recontouring and then smoothing and polishing the surface that has been trimmed is typically a process that can be accomplished in just a few moments and without the use of an anesthetic. In some instances the dentist might feel that it is best to protect the trimmed surfaces by applying fluoride. Other than that, the procedure is complete and the result is essentially maintenance free.

B) Composite dental veneers.

Dental veneers crafted using dental composite (dental bonding) are typically considered to have physical properties that are less desirable than those of porcelain veneers but they can serve a purpose. Especially if only one, or just a few, teeth need veneering so to perfect the appearance of a smile. Composite veneers are placed in a single setting, have a lower cost than porcelain veneers, and although they won't last as long and will stain more readily, can be easily resurfaced or replaced.

C) Dental bonding.

Dental bonding can provide a porcelain veneer alternative in those situations where just one tooth, or a few teeth, have cosmetic deficiencies. Why go to the trouble and expense of resurfacing an entire tooth with porcelain when only a small portion of it contains a cosmetic defect?

Dental bonding can be used to fill in tooth dimples and chips, hide or replace staining and discoloration, and repair damage caused by tooth decay. The life span of bonded restorations is typically not as lasting as porcelain veneers. But this issue will be influenced by factors such as the size of the bonded restoration, the amount of wear and tear it is exposed to, as well as the patient's consumption habits (such as coffee, tea, tobacco). Even so, repair or replacement of bonded restorations is easy and routine.
