The Philips Sonicare HealthyWhite R732 rechargeable sonic toothbrush.

The Sonicare HealthyWhite R732 features three basic operational modes. They are Clean, Sensitive, and Clean and White. (Sonicare's modes are somewhat equivalent to the speed or power settings found on other electric toothbrushes.) The Clean and White mode is unique to the HealthyWhite 700 series of Sonicare brushes.

The Clean mode operates the HealthyWhite R732 in Sonicare's signature 31,000-brush-strokes-per-minute mode. The gentler Sensitive mode is offered as an alternative for those who have difficulty tolerating the vigorous brush agitation created by the Clean mode. The Sensitive mode, however, is a less efficient brushing setting.

As a third option, the HealthyWhite R732 features a Clean and White mode. This setting is the hallmark feature of the Sonicare HealthyWhite 700 series of electric toothbrushes. This selection creates a brushing routine for the user that runs the toothbrush first in Sonicare's Clean mode then followed by their White mode (a brushing mode that is otherwise non-selectable). The whitening effect that Sonicare suggests that the use of their HealthyWhite 700 series of brushes can produce is based on their belief that the Clean and White mode offers superior tooth surface stain removal (therefore creating a whitening effect for the user's teeth). The Clean and White option is described in more detail just below.

The HealthyWhite model R732 sports Sonicare's Smartimer and Quadpacer features. The Smartimer function is a brushing timer that automatically turns off the toothbrush after two minutes of use when it is set to either Clean or Sensitive mode. (Two minutes is the amount of brushing time that Sonicare feels most dentists recommend for their patients). The Quadpacer feature creates a pause-and-beep action that serves as an indication to the user that one-fourth of the current brushing cycle has elapsed. (Sonicare recommends using a brushing approach by which the user mentally segregates their teeth in four separate groupings or "quadrants.")

When the Clean and White mode is selected, the R732 will run for two minutes in Clean mode. At the end of these two minutes the brush will then switch to White mode for thirty seconds before turning off (with an indicating beep sounded at the final 15-second mark). Sonicare's intentions with the Clean and White mode are that the user should focus on cleaning their entire mouth while the brush is operating in Clean mode. When the brush switches to White mode (a point where the user will notice a change in the R732's sound as it switches to the White brushing action), the user should brush the front side of their upper and then lower front teeth for fifteen seconds each. This extra brushing is targeted at removing tooth surface staining on those tooth surfaces most visible to others (and therefore producing a whitening effect for the user's teeth).

The HealthyWhite R732 also possesses Sonicare's Easy-start feature. When selected, this option incrementally increases the power (speed) at which the R732 operates over the user's next fourteen brushings. The Easy-start feature is intended to provide an introductory time period over which the user's mouth is eased into the use of their new toothbrush.

The HealthyWhite model R732 uses Sonicare's ProResults-style brush heads. ProResults brush heads come in two configurations, the Standard and Mini (compact). The HealthyWhite R732 comes packaged with one of each of these brushes. The Standard brush head is typically intended for use by adults. The Mini is available for those who have a comparatively small mouth or limited oral access, adolescents, and people having special brushing needs (hard-to-reach places, braces).

ProResults brush heads are Sonicare's latest toothbrush design. They are somewhat wider and have slightly more flared bristles than those brush heads utilized with previous generations of Sonicare toothbrushes. Philips Sonicare states that because of these design changes the ProResults brush head offers greater brushing efficiency. Possibly more important to the user, ProResults brush head units are designed where they snap onto the brush handle quickly and easily. And they tend to trap less debris than previous brush head designs. The user can place one of three interchangeable color-coded rings on their brush head as a means of personal identification. Each brush head comes with a protective travel cap. The R732's charger base has a place to hold two extra ProResults brush heads. Philips Sonicare recommends that ProResults brush heads should be replaced every three months so to maintain optimal brushing effectiveness.

The HealthyWhite R732 has a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The recharge gauge found on the R732 that indicates if the percentage of charge that remains in the battery is more or less than 50%. The actual charging process takes place as the toothbrush sits in its stand. It can take as long as 24 hours to fully recharge the battery depending upon its initial status. Sonicare recommends that the toothbrush is left in its charging stand when not in use. For the world traveler, the R732 comes with a multi-voltage charger, which can also act as a compact travel charger. As convenience factor, that portion of the HealthyWhite R732's electrical cord that is not needed can be wrapped out of the way inside its base.
