Anterior Tongue :
that portion of the tongue that can move freely. (A)

Posterior Tongue :
the base of the tongue. That portion of the tongue that is anchored to the floor of the mouth. (B)

Papillae :
raised bumps and ridges of soft tissue found on the top and side surfaces of the tongue.

Circumvallate Papillae :
the largest type of papillae, usually numbering between six and twelve. These dome-shaped papillae lie in a v-shaped line across the posterior portion of the tongue just in front of the foramen cecum. (C)

Fungiform Papillae :
these are mushroom-shaped papillae. They are found in the greatest numbers on the tip and sides of the tongue. (D)

Foliate Papillae :
papillae that appear as ridges and grooves on the side of the tongue near its base. (E)

Filiform Papillae :
small long, thin hair-like papillae found across the entire surface of the tongue. (F)

Median Sulcus :
the deep groove that runs down the center of the tongue. (G)

Foramen Cecum :
a shallow indentation that lies at the posterior end of the median sulcus. (H)
