The Dental Check-up: This quiz covers the different instruments and supplies that a dentist might use during a child’s dental examination and cleaning appointment.

Quiz goals: An introduction to the dental office for children preparing for their first visit with the dentist. A pre-visit review for those children returning for their semiannual dental check-up.
- A) Air and Water Syringe
- A tool that sprays water, air or an air-water mist. Dentists use this instrument to wash off and dry teeth.
- B) Tooth Polisher
- A dental tool topped with a small spinning rubber cup. It is used with polishing paste to clean teeth.
Dentists sometimes call this tool a Prophy Handpiece. The word “prophy” is a dental term for “tooth cleaning.” - C) Suction Tip
- A plastic tube attached to a vacuum hose. It is used to remove liquids from a patient’s mouth.
- D) Tooth Polish
- Special toothpaste that a dentist uses to clean teeth. It often contains fluoride. Dentists sometimes call this polish Prophy Paste.
- E) Dental Explorer
- A tool that a dentist uses to feel and inspect a patient’s teeth.
- F) Dental Pliers
- A tweezers-like dental tool. Some dentists use the name Cotton Pliers for this instrument.
- G) Dental Mirror
- The tool a dentist uses so they can see their patient’s back teeth more easily. Some dentists call this instrument a Mouth Mirror.

- A small hand tool that a dentist feels teeth with. It helps the dentist find cavities.
- D) X-ray Machine
- The machine that a dentist uses to take special pictures that show your teeth and jawbones.
- E) Dental Chair
- The chair you sit in at the dentist’s office. It can be raised and tilted so the dentist can see in your mouth better.
- F) Tooth Polisher

- A kind of toothbrush whose bristle movements are generated by an electric motor.
- C) Dental Floss
- Thin ribbon or string used to remove food debris and dental plaque from in between teeth.
- D) Toothpaste
- A gel or creamy paste that is used with a toothbrush to clean teeth.
- E) Fluoride Rinse
- Medicated mouthwash that can help to prevent tooth decay.
